The Wisdom Tree Preschool is a school that understands the unique, individual needs of each child. Our school is not a daycare. We follow the Miller Place school district calendar (with a subject to change as necessary). We are aware and sympathetic to the needs of each individual child. Some children require more support in academic areas while others require support and encouragement in the social areas. The teachers are sensitive to the needs of the children in the classroom and plan their activities accordingly so each child can feel successful and proud of their learning. We are proud to use a multi- sensory approach to learning to reach every child’s individual way of learning. The senses focused on in our teaching are visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile. Using this aspect of teaching helps to reach all children and their individual ways to learn and process information. Lessons are theme based such as Dr. Suess week, fire prevention and arctic animals. Each day a book, art project and academic lesson will be related to the theme of the week. During the school year, the students participate in a science fair and an art show, families are invited to the school on the designated night to see the student’s proud accomplishments. Science is very important to our teachers and is a strong component of our curriculum, students get messy and have fun while using science vocabulary and utilize math skills while participating in their science experiments.
Benchmark reports are done three times a year, this data gives teachers an idea of a student’s present level of learning and which areas a child may need more guidance in.
We believe it is essential to foster a child’s emotional, intellectual and social growth through daily social and academic activities. We provide a nurturing environment where a child is given opportunities to gain self-confidence and self-esteem while learning and having fun.
Our school offers date night for parents. This is 3 hours of fun for the children! They will enjoy pizza, make a craft and have fun with music while spending time with their friends at the school.
Our pre-k program prepares children for kindergarten socially and academically.
The pre-k class is center based with the children rotating to each center when it is time to do so. These centers provide academic, sensory, and social activities for the children. Circle time is a very important part of our day as it encourages participation in class. Topics covered (but not limited to) are the weather, calendar, numbers, letters, colors and shapes. The children participate in Spanish and sign language fun activities each day.
There are specific days of the week that stress individual areas in learning.
Monday- Science and numbers
Tuesday- Language and letters
Wednesday- Music and math
Thursday- Phonics and reading readiness
Friday- Art
Each month the children will learn about a specific artist- in September they might study Jackson Pollack, October might be a study of Paul Cezanne and a favorite in November is Norman Rockwell. The students create their own version of each artist’s masterpiece!
We also celebrate music and study a music genre each month. The students listen to and become familiar with various composers while having fun moving to the music! Jazz, disco and country music are a few of the genres presented to the students. Like the other classes in the school, the pre-k students also have show & tell and get to take home a school buddy for a few days on Fridays, when it is their turn. We study sight words and sentence building in January along with our early reader program. The students will be given an early reader book to take home to read with their families and then return it to school where they will read it with their teacher. These books build self-esteem for the children as they are able to read to their teacher and receive praise for doing so.
Once a week the class will receive the Scholastic weekly reader named “Let’s Find Out”. The children enjoy reading and discussing the pictures and articles in the weekly reader. We also receive a science magazine named Science Spin once a month. There are articles in this magazine that are interesting for the pre-k age that pertain to areas of science. Activities like this encourage and build conversation skills with the students since they discuss the magazine with each other.
Our pre-k program stresses the importance of self-help skills and also team work with our classmates. These skills are very important for the children entering kindergarten.
